What to Do When Your LCD Screen Cracks Up?

When your LCD screen cracks... what things should you consider in deciding whether you should repair or replace your device? Ask yourself:

1. What DATA is on the device?

How important is that data? Do you have any Backups? How current are the Backups?

Assuming you haven't killed the hard drive in the device...
* Can you STILL see enough on the screen to be able to navigate around?
* Are you able to access the device long enough to backup and/or extract the data on it?

2. How OLD is the device?

Often the age of the device is the clue here to whether you should get a cracked screen repaired, or replaced the device completely.

Most "modern" LCD screens are simple and relatively cheap to replace.

However the screens on "older" devices are much more difficult and expensive to repair. It might just be simpler and a lot cheaper just to get a new one :)

3. What do you USE the device for?

Ask yourself whether it is even worth repairing? If it meets your needs, then by all means investigate repair.

However, with the rate that technology advances these days, a new device might be more productive for you.

4. Is the device still under contract?

While a repair might be covered by a "warranty" (unlikely with cracked screen)... but maybe you have "insurance"? Many telcos for example ensure that you insure expensive smartphones against just this sort of damage.

Also... if the device is under contract, you WILL need to continue paying for it... AS WELL AS trying to pay off a new one.

The costs of replacing a device that is still under contract could be ridiculous.
