The Unaffordable Becomes Affordable

In Part 1 of The Outsourcing Phenomenon, we looked at how technology has opened up access to a huge international resource that was only previously available to large organisations.

In doing so, this technological development addressed the staffing dilemma of SME’s, even to the smallest of micro businesses, and in doing so made the unaffordable, affordable.

In this article I would like to show how one way how small business can use remote staff and the benefits involved. As a basis of the example, I will use an example of a self-employed person who has decided to grow the business.

This can be done by

  1. Using a professional telemarketer to call clients and prospects with specific objectives in place,
  2. Developing and maintaining a dynamic website that consistently ranks highly with the major search engines and is designed to generate additional qualified leads and
  3. Having a Virtual Assistant to assist with all administrative activities, assisting clients, following up prospects, setting appointments, answering phones, emails, faxes etc. and if required managing the telemarketer and web designer/SEO

Costs:

  1. Part time telemarketer – Cost $600 per month – (80 hours per month)
  2. Full time web designer/SEO – Cost $1400 per month – (160 hours per month)
  3. Full time Virtual Assistant – Cost $1200 per month – (160 hours per month)

Total cost using of one part time and two full time remote staff – $3200 – barely the cost of one full time person.

By using remote staff, the small business owner is able to access skilled people that would normally cost well over $8000 per month for the same number of personnel and hours worked.

The unaffordable becomes affordable!

For the money spent there are a number of additional benefits:

  • The remote staff option injects an additional 240 hours of activity into the business compared to the equivalent cost of one full time person.
  • The owner can grow staff requirements as needed.
  • The owner can be involved in more income generating activity, has more capacity to work ON the business and not IN the business and has more time in general.
  • Also there is no sick pay, holiday pay etc as remote staff are only paid for hours worked.

Apart from making the unaffordable affordable, when you look at it, using remote staff has, dollar for dollar, more capacity to have a positive impact on a business than any other activity.
