Starting Out
What's the Key to Success?Disclaimer
I wish I knew... it'd make running my SME (Small to Medium Enterprise) just so much easier!
However, there isn't any magic recipe...
Probably, if you look at what you do on a daily basis to make your business more attractive to current and potential customers, you could be looking at the answer!
Daily, you'll do research - lots of it! You also network... gather ideas... set up marketing opportunities... and constantly "fiddle" with the whole package to find the right "mix" that works!
And, if you want to establish a new outlet for your SME, you'll do even MORE of the above.
If you were setting up shop somewhere "down the road", you wouldn't just slap on a coat of paint, pile your stock in through the front door, and sit back to wait for the customers to come.... would you?
To put your business on the road to success, that sort of approach will obviously not work.
One of the keys to success in any business is a high level of commitment to the ongoing improvement of the facility you are providing to your customers.
When SME's establish an outlet using the Internet as their new location, why do so many of them NOT include a similar level of commitment in the planning of their online presence?
You can't just "plonk" your material on the internet and leave it for twelve months, just waiting for the customers to come. That level of commitment just won't work, and yet sadly, that approach is being used so often, most likely because many of the people doing the "advising" really have no idea of what works on the Internet.
Even worse, is the SME who ignores or doesn't even seek out professional advice and just leaps in to this new medium in D-I-Y mode.
A fact of Internet life is that it is a dynamic medium. You've got to offer your online customers something "fresh" every so often to encourage them to return, and to get them to refer others to you, or the whole thing will just NOT work!
A commitment is needed from you and your web site provider and designer in the ongoing development and promotion of the web site, and providing the continual "adjustments" needed, to make the web site work, so you don't get Lost in Cyberspace!
