Oft Neglected Business Resource
By Stephen Spry : Filed under Managing
Like any business tool, the Internet has its own set of limitations you must be aware of, if you have any chance of succeeding… or maybe even just surviving…
This particular personal skill is VITALLY important to you… but so many people tend to overlook it, or never really learn how to use it… that their work (and even their lifestyle) can suffer tremendously…
In fact, it is the most often neglected, under-utilised resource of the Small Business Operator.
TIME! - your most ferocious enemy, or your best friend!
O.K. so this is about time management, but don’t stop reading now.
Everyone has exactly the same amount of time as everyone else - no more, no less. Many of us battle to get things done in the limited time available, and always seem to have things continually expand to fill (and exceed) the time available to do them.
Sound familiar?
How many times have you said “If only there were more hours in a day…”?
Unhappily there are only ever 24.
Most of us know someone who is able to get far more done in the same time and get the right things done in that time, which gives them much greater satisfaction in their work and in life generally.
Time IS a resource which everyone has, and it is very unique. It is our most valuable resource of all and one that must be ruthlessly protected!! Unfortunately, it is often squandered and forgotten.
For many, time is a source of continual worry and stress - a tyrant! Improved time management can lead to less stress, more job satisfaction and a greater sense of achievement.
Effective use of time is a learnable skill & improving your management of time will lead to greater job satisfaction.
The basis of better utilising the time resource is by:
- setting priorities (by planning) for the more efficient and effective use of our time, and by
- identifying the major time wasters which must either be delegated or eliminated.
Given the nature of our work, Small Business Operators can benefit greatly from knowing how to avoid (or even just being aware of) major time-wasters, and becoming better users of the resource of time.
