Time Wasters - Unexpected Visitors
By Stephen Spry : Filed under Managing
Unexpected visitors are another major interruption you have to deal with. The nature of your job means you also have to expect this type of interruption where too many people simply “drop in” without prior notice or appointment.
How many times do they “drop in” for a chat, which turns into an extended visit? This is especially so if you work from home, when your “friends” feel that you are always available for a cuppa!
Too many people accept interruptions as a way of life, as if it is beyond their control. If you can get other people’s respect for your time, and give them the respect they deserve, this vicious circle will be broken.
Make sure that sales reps know you are available for their “sales” calls, and they can see you only during those times!
The number of interruptions you experience will be in direct proportion to your availability. An “open-door” policy doesn’t mean your door is literally open all day! Be frank and firm with time wasters - use body language to convey the message that you have to go on working!
Other interruptions such as procrastination, extended tea breaks, cluttered desk, shared work areas, stopping to chat, playing computer games, day dreaming, personal calls, reading irrelevant material - all break the flow of thought and interfere with the best use of your time.
The absolute best way of dealing with interruptions is to make sure that you plan to be unavailable. Every day, plan a time/place when you can not be disturbed - lock your door, turn the phone off - to allow you to get on with important work.
