Government and industry leaders gather for conference on skills shortages
With an ageing population and a higher percentage of workers approaching retirement, an increasing number of industries are feeling the pinch as demand for specialized skills outstrips supply.
In addition to ongoing controversy over skill-based migration visas, skill shortages are a long-term threat to the economy and are a day-to-day reality for thousands of Australian employers. It is in this context that The Australian Financial Review will be hosting its second annual Skilling Australia Conference in Sydney on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 September. This major national event will feature a special key note address by the Hon John Howard MP, Prime Minister of Australia and will bring together Federal and State Government representatives, educators, industry groups and business leaders for a national debate on how to implement practical strategies to tackle skill supply shortage across a wide range of industries. The Australian Financial Review Skilling Australia Conference, which will address the most urgent topics and issues around recruitment, training, retention, generational change and workforce redesign, follows up broad policy-focused plenary sessions with three afternoon streamed-programs for the shortage-afflicted Banking, Accounting & Finance, Healthcare and Engineering & Manufacturing sectors. Signaling their continuing commitment to tackling the issue, parliamentary representatives and ministers will be participating in talks at the Australian Financial Review Skilling Australia Conference. Perspectives on regional skilled migration, training policy and mature age workers’ place in the workforce will be addressed by The Hon Carmel Tebbut MP, NSW Minister of Education & Training, The Hon Paul Caica MP, SA Minister for Employment, Training and Further Education and the Hon David Bartlett MHA, Tasmania Minister for Education. Leader of the Opposition the Hon Kim Beazley MP will provide a counterpoint to government discussion in a keynote address and will offer the Opposition’s vision for skilling Australia. A range of experts on workforce optimization, will round out the comprehensive policy analysis at this major national policy event.
